David Aune translates Rev. 3:2: "Be vigilant and strengthen those who
remain but are on the point of death" (Word Biblical Commentary, Vol.
52A, pp. 215-216).
This translation seems most reasonable to me in view of the context
and literary character of the book. Jesus is speaking to a PRESENT and
prevailing situation. There are those in Sardis who are near the point
of spiritual death. Such ones are in need of being snatched out of the
fire.
