There is no doubt that the Biblical writers meant it just as it sounds- the
beginning of time, history, or whatever. Only post scientific exegetes
attempting to harmonize the bible with science have attempted to suggest
that it means something else. This harmonization is necessary for them
because at all costs the bible must be right- even in science.
