The Anchor Bible Dictionary article titled "Bible, Euphemisms
and Dysphemisms in" addresses this and other odd expressions.
I wonder whether Marvin Pope didn't have a bit too much fun
writing it.... Seriously, though, it explains quite a few oddities
in biblical prose.
