Unfortunately, this "solution" ----- even for Microsoft users --- only
works when both the sender and the recipient are using Word 97.
It _is_ possible for users of Word 6 and Word for Windows 95 to read a file
formatted with Word 97 by using a conversion file downloaded free from a
Microsoft site
BUT the accompanying .DOC file explains that:
Word 97 Feature Word 95 or Word 6.x Conversion Issue
Basic Use Features Not supported
Embedded fonts
Comments
Embedded fonts are lost, and Word 95 or Word 6.x assigns the closest font
available.
Perhaps the original senders could tell us roughly the proportion of Word
97 users to users of earlier versions in their group?
