Though he doesn't deal at length with the grammatical question in
this passage, Ben Witherington does take the DIA / META distinction into
account. One suggestion he has, is that the META phrase may indicate
"during the third year"; presumably the third of the fourteen, though
possibly the third from Paul's conversion.
Witherington's discussion may be found in his "Acts of the Apostles:
A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary," Wm. B. Eerdmans/Paternoster Press. Take
a look at pp 86-97, and especially 88-90. This is in the Introduction
chapter, in the section dealing with the Galatian chronology. Of
course, Witherington isn't saying anything, here, that hasn't been said
before, but his treatment is very clear and well-written.
