Although the two verbs are not synonyms, in this context they mean about
the same thing.
One might note the variant readings here:
(a) AKOUSEI (future) "he will hear"
(b) AKOUEI (present) "he hears"
(c) AN AKOUSH (subjunctive with AN) "he may hear"
Although, in this context, there is not much real difference between them.
