Jayce,
Because after a number of years of diligent effort you can throw away
your NASB, NIV, KJV, RSV and with some exposure to Hebrew syntax you can
read the LXX with reasonable ease. So Greek gets you into both
Testaments, with a little Hebrew on the side. A little Hebrew means
several years of study but not rapid reading fluency.
Dabbling in NT Greek is somewhat of a different matter. But most serious
students were at one time dabblers. So one must take care not to be too
harsh with dabblers since one might be stifling a potential serious
student. For those who never get beyond the dabbeling stage it is better
to just stick with the NASB, NIV, KJV, RSV and not try and fool anyone.
