Actually, it doesn't matter if you know the person or not. The nature
of an email-borne virus is that if you get infected by one the first
thing it does is send copies of itself to people in your address book.
That you are an old and dear friend gives them no protection.
The thing is to never "open" (ie, run) an _unsolicited_ .exe file from
anybody. (Well, I suppose you could email him back and ask, "Did you
really send me this, or is that just some email virus replicating
itself?")
