I think the most basic sense for KATABALLW is "put down"; the first time I
remember ever seeing it (and KATABOLH) was in Plato's Apology, where both
the noun and verb mean "slander"--but of course "put down" is a verbal
phrase that can ramify in numerous ways, including "put down roots", "put
down a foundation, etc., etc.
