Dear Harold,
You wonder whether 1 Cor 7:36 might tell a man who deflowered his
fiancee that it was alright if they got married. By Exod 22:16, a man could
take an enticed woman as his bride, paying her father the bride price.
However, the father had the option of refusing to give her to him, a fact
which did not alter his obligation to pay the bride price. And if he took
her as a wife, having lain with her, he could never divorce her (Deut
22:29).

These laws suggest that such behavior was not considered proper. If he
deflowered her, he would not "think" (NOMIZEI) it was unseemly; he would
know that it was. And what difference would it make if she was past age? Is
the alternative that he was engaged to an underaged girl (maybe ten years
old?). And should he only marry her if it ought to be? What if it ought not
to be?

                                        Yours,
                                        Harold Holmyard
