Along the same lines as Carl Conrad's note about the Messianic Servant,
John Stendahl's note about the harsh modern connotation of the word slave,
and the sometimes important position of Greek slaves is the significant
example of Abraham's servant in Genesis 24. He was part of Abraham's
household and accepted his status in life, even in a foreign country apart
from his master. He served his master while bearing all the dignity of a
nobleman. He is designated an (EBED, which corresponds to DOULOS, but the
term was probably an honorific term in his case. He had charge of all that
belonged to Abraham (Deut 24:2).
