Your answer was breath taking. Thank you.
It seems that we can sum up my problem as a confusion between semantic
function and pragmatic function. I will be the first to admit my near total
ignorance of "pragmatics." Every time someone brings up this subject my mind
tends to fog over. I will need to do some home work on this.
Thank you very much for a most helpful and thorough response to my question.
