Dear Brian,
I have understand the new command of 1 John 2:8 to be the new command
given by Jesus in John 13:34-35:

A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have
loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that
ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Love to the brethren is a large focus in 1 John. And this interpretation
helps to explain 1 John 2:7, where John writes, "Beloved, not a new command
do I write to you, but an old command, which you have had from the
beginning." For the command to love was only strengthened by Jesus' words.
It goes back to the book of Leviticus, and backwards to the creation.
Leviticus 19:17-18 states: "Do not hate your brother in your heart . . . .
Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love
your neighbor as yourself."

                                        Yours,
                                        Harold Holmyard
