I'm completing an MA in Biblical studies here in Rochester, NY
and am considering going on to do doctoral level work in the field. My
off-topic question concerns assessing my abilities in the area of successfully
completing comprehensive exams at the Ph. D. level. While my ability to
write well formulated research papers, focus papers, etc. is fairly
solid, I'm less adept at writing essay style examinations. Could any
of the doctoral candidates or Ph.D.s out there offer some insights into
this phase of the process perhaps including how one prepares for such events and
if there are resources or suggestions for improving one's chance for
success. Another way of stating the question, 'what are the keys to
success and how might one develop the relevant skillset in preparation for
the exams?'

Any off-line responses will be greatly appreciated.
thanx.
