As Wis. 3:11 has it:
Yes, wretched are they who scorn wisdom and discipline: their hope is void,
their toil unavailing, their achievements unprofitable;

  Spicq, Ceslas. Theological Lexicon of the New Testament. 3 vols. Peabody,
Mass: Hendrickson, 1996. has a comprehensive entry on the LXX usage and on
secular writers of Paul's time and slightly later ( Epictetus, Josephus,
Plutarch )
He notes that:
" In October of A.D 64 Thaubus announces to his father ' Your unhappy
daughter Herennia [ THN TALAIPWRON QUGATERA SOU ] died .... the ninth of
Phaophi in premature labour '[ P.Found 75 ]. So when Paul cries out "
wretched man that I am
( Ro. 7:34 ) we must interpret this as both _infelix_ and _miser_; '
Unhappy and miserable man that I am. Who will deliver me from this
miserable body' "

After citing Epictetus, Plutarch, 'Joseph and Aseneth', and Test. Abraham
,Spicq continues:
" The exclamation is a common one, whether after a mistake or a sin, to
EXPRESS THE CONDITON [ emphais mine ] of the guilty person, or on the
occasion of the loss of a loved one. It is the cry of a broke heart ".
