Assuming that "it" in the quote refers to TOUTO, the claim would be that
TOUTO refers to grace and faith and is therefore a singular form
functioning as a collective.
Smyth para. 996 notes: "Collective singular. A noun in the singular may
denote a number of persons or things."
Robertson (Word Pictures) suggests that TOUTO refers "to the act of being
saved by grace conditioned on faith on our part."
This section of the letter is obviously didactic. Verse 8 appears to be a
conclusion of sorts, reflecting back on the themes of being chosen, being
dead (presumably therefore helpless cf Rom 5:6), and the kindness of God.
