Dear Cassian,

The third possibility that you offered was:

>(3) as an indirect question (expecting a 'no' answer?) (can't remember
>where I read this, maybe somewhere in Smyth): "See whether the light in
>you is darkness (and I hope it's not!)."

Perhaps this alternative came from BAGD, which lists this use of MH in Luke
11:35 as an interrogative particle when a negative answer is expected to
the question.

Your first option was:

>(1) as an expression of apprehension (cf. Blass Debrunner Funk
>370(3):"Take care, then, lest the light in you be darkness."

BAGD notes the use of MH as a conjunction after verbs of fearing, etc.:
that . . . (not), lest. The lexicon then gives BLEPEIN as one of these
verbs, in the meaning "take care." However, BAGB gives as the verb forms
that follow MH in this construction only the present subjunctive, the
aorist subjunctive, and the future indicative. In Luke 11:35 the verb is a
present indicative.

                                Yours,
                                Harold Holmyard
