Jeffers book is a really interesting read. You have to understand that most
Americans that are my age (37) and younger have never studied anything about
the Ancient Greek and Roman world. Latin is almost non-existent in our
schools these day. Things that were common knowledge to many students 75
years ago about Roman society and law are not known. Another good book in a
similar vein is Albert Bell's _Exploring the New Testament World_.
Nashville, Tennessee: Thomas Nelson, 1998, which is written on still more
popular level.
