Maurice,
BDF (#267.2) and N. Turner (p. 182 h) agree that the prefixed TO has no
impact on the "meaning" of the indirect question TIS AN EIH MEIZWN AOUTWN.
However this leaves a fairly significant question unanswered.
The article turns the whole clause TIS AN EIH MEIZWN AOUTWN into a
substantive (Plummer ICC, pps 37, 257, see also A. Thumb #269). This may
not change the meaning WITHIN the clause but I would suspect that it does
alter the relationships between the higher level constituents.
When the constituent TIS AN EIH MEIZWN AOUTWN is made into a substantive by
the addition of a prefixed TO the next logical question is what function
does this constituent have in the higher level structure and how does the
presence of TO alter the state of affairs in the structure above the level
of clause?
This is my attempt at restating the original question which I think remains
unanswered at this point. I do not know the answer.
