I would further suggest reading Moises Silva's "Miblical words and there
meaning: an introduction to lexical semantics" or J.P. Louw's "Semantics of
NT Greek". Silva's book in particular not only points out the various
errors but also shows the student how to do word studies in a linguistically
responsible manner.

I mentioned in my earlier post the book _Exegetical Fallacies_ by D.A.
Carson, in which is a helpful chapter on word study fallacies that includes
"The root fallacy," which corresponds to what you refer to as "the
etymological fallacy." Your second paragraph reminded me of another section
in that same chapter that applies to the question at hand: "4. Appeal to
unknown or unlikely meanings."
