Louw & Nida have some comments on this problem/question:

23.104 kaqeudw; koimaomai: (figurative extensions of meaning of kaqeudwa and
koimaomaia, respectively, Œto sleep,¹ 23.66) to sleep, as a euphemistic
expression for the state of being dead ‹ Œto be dead, to have died.¹
kaqeudw: eite grhgorwmen eite kaqeudwmen Œwhether we are alive or dead¹ 1Th

Reviewing the options:

> 2) be watchful, alert, spiritually awake

I would argue that the final statement AMA SUN AUTW ZHSWMEN would appear to
rule out options 1 & 2. I don't think that the switch in Paul's use of
these terms from verse 6 to verse 10 need cause us any consternation.
Examples can be found where a word is used twice within the same clause with
different meanings. This is not a serious problem.

From the commentaries: Option #3 is followed by C. Wannamaker (NIGTC) , L.
Morris (NICNT, 1st ed.), H. Alford, H.A.W. Meyer, C. Moffatt. All these
guys plus Louw & Nida, what more could you ask for?
