I did research this verse many days ago but discarded
it since the men were placed under him in virtue of
his position/title. There was no choice being made
here, and I agree, Luke's other usage in Acts 28 is
also middle.

But I must apologize for opening up this theological
can of worms. I really had no idea it would escalate
into this discussion. I realize we all subscribe to
theological positions on a choice basis rather than a
grammatical basis, so please kindly omit this question
from future discussions.
