I know that Carl and others have replied to this already, but perhaps I might
add a bit. The two senses are not that far apart since one can act
shamefully as well as carry the position of less honor (a more or less
related concept of shame) in a positive manner in the public arena. So the
respect indicated, as noted by others, is that of recognizing the superior
status of another and thereby publically acting in a manner that positively
relates the "shame" level or the lower social status of the person involved.
