look at the same text)
Since EN MORFHi QEOU hUPARCWN is a circumstantial participial phrase
qualifying a clause (hOS ... hHGHSATO ...) in the aorist indicative,
hUPARCWN can be conveyed by "existing" or "being" in the present tense to
retain the construction in translation, or it can be coordinated with the
aorist of hHGHSATO ("although/when/inasmuch as [he] was ..."). Neither
version is wrong; this is simply a matter of translation strategy. Theology
has nothing to do with it--it's strictly a matter of understanding the
Greek construction and settling for oneself which of several possible
English (or OTHER target-language) formulations one prefers to employ.
