NEW BAMBOO BOOK FROM CHINA

A Compendium of Chinese Bamboos

This is the book we have all been waiting for. As expected,
the experts from China have crafted a classic volume based on clear
descriptions and the best photos of mature bamboo species I have ever
seen in one place. Altogether, 39 genera and more than 500 species
are included in this book. The morphological characteristics,
geographical distribution and usage of every species is described
fully and accurately. The compendium is the most complete monograph in
the field of bamboo research up to the present. There are more than
400 color photos displaying 31 genera, 209 species and 50 varieties
and forms. Most of the photos are close up views of bamboo shoots
allowing for their use in bamboo identification. Many of the photos
show the leaf, flower and culm distribution. Many of the bamboo
photographs are of beautiful species and varieties that have never
been seen in the U.S.A.
In the introductory section of the book there is a two page
brief introduction to bamboo plants. The authors attempt to deal with
the confusing subject of bamboo taxonomy. The rarity of flowers and
fruit for most bamboo species is the main problem, therefore
taxonomists have to rely on the morphology of the vegetative parts.
Of these, the bamboo shoot sheath is the most important. Another
complicating factor, is the characteristics of the vegetative parts
vary greatly with site conditions. To sum it up, it is stated that
these outstanding issues in bamboo taxonomy remain to be studied
further by bamboo taxonomists.
The distribution of bamboo in the world and in China is
extensive. The world is divided into three regions: The Asian-Pacific,
The American, and The African. Further sub-division distributes
bamboo into four main regions of China.
The appendices include the latest list of references on
bamboo taxonomy, a chart of the taxonomical characteristics of bamboo
genera in China and a complete index to the species.
        A Compendium of Chinese Bamboo is 242 pages, 8.5Mail X 11Mail,
Glossy paper and hardbound, 1994. The cost of this book including
UPS delivery is $96.00 US. International postage more.
