  Design navigation icons wisely
Graphics used for navigation are almost always bunk. Unless you can come up with an icon that by itself denotes what the page stands for, don't waste your time making one or the user's time downloading one. And don't even think about using one of those stock art icons that ever so elequently says "Not only do I lack the creativity to make my own icons, but I'm more than happy to settle for the mediocre icons available to the masses."

But if you do come up with useful icons, don't include any text in the image. That's overkill. Again, if someone can't tell by just looking at the icon, then it's not worth it. Just use a regular text link that helps the page download faster.

This also carries over to icons used on the page itself. Don't throw something up there just because you think it's "cute" or "neato". You're a pinhead who needs to be beaten. Only use icons that pertain to the content at hand.

Don't waste the user's time!
