  Offer multiple navigation approaches
Different people are using different technologies to look at and navigate your site. Know this! When I'm in a hurry to download something to install on my workstation, mothra, I use lynx, a straight-up, no-frills, all-text browsers. When I'm on the hunt for serious hardcore porn, I use Netscape and/or Internet Explorer. Because of the wide variety of browser software out there, you must build a navigation system that can cater to all groups. You can use images and image maps for people using graphical browsers, but always provide text links for those of us using text browsers. You should also know that graphical browsers give the user the capability to turn off graphics. Don't assume anything. Build for the lowest common denominator.

Despite the fact that I loathe and despise the boys and girls at C|Net, I gotta admit, they've got their bases covered: text links out the wazoo! Yeah, they got the pretty graphics and stuff, but their strength is their text links. And dear god, there are so many of them to choose from!! And what's even cooler is that there's always more than one way to get to the same data.
