Hello:  Do make sure you check on David Beveridge's work - the "spine of
hydration"; he and his students have worked a lot on this.  Also see the
work of Kumar and Rosenberg (J. Biomol. Struct. Dynamics of < 1 year ago).
Experimentally, Berman (I believe this is the spelling, but she is/was at
the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia) has looked in detail at
hydration of oligonucleotides in crystals (also collaborated with
Beveridge).
