I so appreciate Carl's apology. Anyone who writes or speaks publicly
understands how easy it is to say things that we would pay almost any
price to be able to take back, either because of actual falsehood or
because of unanticipated reactions.
I owe Carl an acknowledgment, at least, if not an apology, for my
comment about his "disparaging Scripture." I did not mean to imply
that such was his INTENT, just that such was the RESULT, from the
point of view I represent, however unintended it may have been
(something like a man's telling his wife that she looks better than
usual--is she supposed to kiss him or slap him?). I do know, from
private correspondence, that Carl thinks his own view of Scripture to
be very high, in its own way higher than mine. I appreciate his not
pressing the debate as he could have done on this point. It shows
that he respects the boundaries of the list even better than he
expects others to do.
While I must firmly reject Carl's theology, I do want to thank him
for showing himself a gentleman. I know that my own multitude of
words includes error, and I hope that when I misspeak I will be
equally gracious when called to account.
