Another slant on this is this: if you live in an old country (e.g. somewhere in
Europe) you will find that place names still linger, even if the referent has long
since disappeared or ceased its function, for instance "The Corn Exchange" (where the
farmers would bring their corn (wheat, etc.) for trade with merchants) often appears
as a place name in smaller towns, but it is merely a shell of a building, often
transformed into a theatre or community centre.
This does not negate what Jim West wrote, however.
