This seems unlikely since the author seems to be going to great pains to
describe the functioning of the pool *at that time* as a pool. I understand
your point, but if people are described as exchanging corn at "The Corn
Exchange" at a given point in time, I think it's safe to presume that the
title is descriptive rather than historical.

Another slant on this is this: if you live in an old country (e.g. somewhere

Europe) you will find that place names still linger, even if the referent
has long
since disappeared or ceased its function, for instance "The Corn Exchange"

farmers would bring their corn (wheat, etc.) for trade with merchants) often
appears
as a place name in smaller towns, but it is merely a shell of a building,
often
transformed into a theatre or community centre.
