It is flax straw used as thatch.

yup. (oops- I forgot- Im not supposed to use that word.) yes, it is indeed
thatching or roofing straw. See Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" 736.

No. I mean I suppose it could be transformed into it if someone wished, but
the word seems to be used here for thatching straw. PCair.Zen.470 uses it in
just that sense I think.
