"Canada's River Heritage" Conference Celebrates System's Tenth Anniversary

A national conference will celebrate Canada's rivers this October. Trent
University, QLF/Atlantic Center for the Environment and the Canadian Canoe
Museum will sponsor a three-day event on October 27-30, 1994 on the Trent
campus in Peterborough, Ontario to mark the tenth anniversary of the Canadian
Heritage Rivers System. This provincial/Federal/territorial co-operative
program protects and commemorates the natural and cultural heritage and
recreational value of Canada's rivers. Founded in 1984, the System includes
to date over 4,500 kilometers of twenty-seven rivers in every province and
territory, and is adding new rivers each year. Public participation is key to
the future of the System, which includes rivers on private lands like the
Grand, the Jacques Cartier and the Saint Croix as well as in parks and
protected areas such as the South Nahanni, the Yukon, the Thelon, the
Clearwater and the Boundary Waters. Conference aims are:

* To celebrate the values of Canada's river heritage and to recognize
the tenth anniversary of the Canadian Heritage Rivers System;
* To describe and evaluate the progress made in protecting, using and
interpreting Canada's Heritage Rivers in the System's first decade;
* To consider the future of Canada's river heritage; and
*	To promote national awareness of and greater public participation in
the Canadian Heritage Rivers System.

Speakers from academia, government, industry, recreation and nongovernmental
organizations will present both scholarly research and participatory
workshops, and conference proceedings will be published as a final report.
Sessions will include concurrent tracks on POLICY, ADVENTURE and STEWARDSHIP,
and plenary sessions on the BACKGROUND, CURRENT ISSUES, and FUTURE of the
CHRS and Canada's river heritage. Special events open to the public will
feature films and videos, exhibits, arts and entertainment, and a special
Voyageurs' Banquet to honor the symbol of the Canadian Heritage Rivers
System, the voyageur.

The conference particularly invites the participation of community leaders,
nongovernmental organizations, First Nations, Francophones and other
multicultural groups as well as those instrumental in founding and shaping
the CHRS and other river stewardship programs. For more information, please
